New recording: World So Big

Or whatever you call it when your studio is your living room.
World Is So Big
The world is so big
then again it’s all so small…
I might be in your arms tomorrow night
or I might never make it home to you at all.

Anyhow, here’s a new recording with drums, bass, guitars, even a little electric organ kinda thing.

Like a ghost

The world is so big

You hope you’re just a memory to her, as you squat on the heels of your boots in a forlorn little park on a hill over the city, smoking a cigarette and looking down. You want to be a memory… faint, as though you died in an almost forgotten war.

Another reading of this song… not sure why I felt compelled to do it again, just now. I was fooling around with the minor slide tuning and remembered I used to do it in a similar tuning a few years back. The recent version had an almost jaunty folk-funk thing going… here I go back to a darkly minor feel… the feel of a storm gathering. I was hoping to suggest a cold, restless spirit driven to self-exile by his own emptiness. Not to get purple on ya.

World So Big*

The world is so big
then again the world’s so small…
I might be in your arms tomorrow night
or I might never make it home to you at all

true love, baby, the bottom drops out
and then you fall…
it only happens one time baby
if you’re lucky maybe not at all

I could live a thousand lifetimes
I’d never forget a single one of your lies…
I could die a million times
ant the ghost of you would still draw me back to life

Hoping for rain…

The world is so big...

You know you’re lonely when you find yourself doing lonely things like hitching half the length of California (don’t try that in your century, kids) or going on long, rambling, solo camping trips, driving from forsaken spot to god forsaken spot and packing up and moving on if anyone else shows up in camp even if you just got there that morning. You find yourself listening for thunder through the mountains a lot. Feeling it resonate in the emptiness inside you… filled for a moment with rumbling sound and dull pain and then empty again.

I wanted to suggest the self-exiled lover… consumed with yearning yet unwilling or unable to return home. Pride, fatalism, anger…

I knew a guy like that once. I worked with him for a short while here in Long Beach. He would talk about the family he left “to find work” years before, talk about them as though they were a thousand miles away, ten thousand. He’d never seen them again — but he thought of them every day, wondered how his kids were. Wondered if his woman was with another man.

One day I asked him where he came from and I was surprised when he said, Long Beach.

So I asked him if he’d been traveling when he met the wife he’d left behind. He looked at me funny for a second. She lives in North Long Beach, he said.
