Looking for trouble… I’m already in trouble

The rusty little Bug was leaking rain in from the windows and they had to keep their feet forward to keep them out of the murky water that would slosh back and forth from back seat to the front, washing across the shifter linkage hump like the North Sea over a broken dike.

But they were stopped now, with the heater off and the windows streaked through fog, and she was crying long silvery tears that streamed down her cheeks amd fell to the damp wool of her overcoat. Her slim shoulders moved forward convulsively with her sobs and he sat in the driver’s seat, his hands shoved deep into the pockets of his own overcoat.

He alternated between trying to ignore her and stifling the compulsion to reach out and try to comfort her, an urge that cried from so far down in his wintry soul that it seemed like the shade of a feeling from some forgotten movie… some world he’d lived in, once, so long ago that it was spring there.

He tried to burrow down to find that feeling somewhere, lost in a snowdrift at the bottom of his emptiness.

But all he found were his fists balled in his coat pockets and a girl sobbing beside him.

Looking for Trouble

Some people say
Love is a game
but I’m telling you now that I wasn’t playing
when I fell in love with you

Here I go again
Looking for reasons where there aren’t any reasons
Here I go again
looking for trouble… I’m already in trouble

That day in my car
don’t say you don’t know
You held me so close
begging me to let go
I told myself you were just confused

Here I go again . . .
You always said
that it was fate
I’m telling you now
that I was framed
when I fell in love with you

Here I go again . . .

A dog barks
the wind howls through the night
I whisper your name and
stare in the fire
I can’ keep myself from calling out to you

Here I go again
Looking for reasons where there aren’t any reasons
Here I go again
looking for trouble… I’m already in trouble

Looking for reasons… there aren’t any reasons

Looking for reasons... there aren't any reasons

Love and confusion.

Which is the hand, which the glove?

The relationship that had just ended when I wrote this song had been, for most of its near-three year course, one of relative stability. Oh sure, we broke up once or twice and there may have been a few indiscretions (well, there were) but by and large, we had a certain stability.

Until nearly the end of our journey together…

Like hitting a wind shear at 40,000 feet, we were thrown like rag dolls around the now-emptied fuselage of our airliner of love… bouncing off the walls and each other until we were thrown out, unceremoniously, in seperate heaps on the tarmac of our Terminal Destination.

As I wrote when I posted the first version of this song here on AYoS nearly a year ago, I was sitting in a light rain with a cheap guitar in my lap, looking out over a stormy Mexican sea when I wrote this song. I’d gone down to Mexico by myself to get away from my relationship woes and this and two other songs came spilling out soon after I sat down with a pint of Tequila and a 6 pack of Bohemia.

But this version owes little to the mood of that time. It’s as goofy as the silly season can get, complete with falsetto and bass back up vocals (all courtesy of my 3-octaves-of-nasality vocal range) and loose acoustic boogie guitar.

Looking for Trouble [rough project demo]

Looking for Trouble

It was a stormy afternoon on the rain spattered patio of a rundown little motel north of Ensenada in 1981. The ocean raged against the rocks just beyond the edge of the unpainted concrete patio.

I’d pulled a plain wooden chair out of the room onto the slab and I sat there, a six pack of Bohemia or maybe Negra Modelo in a sack next to the chair and a bottle of Sauza Extra next to it.

Sea spray mixed with rain coated me and my guitar — a $20 special I’d picked up on an earlier trip — but how often do you get to write songs with the ocean crashing literally at your feet and the sky roiling like a time lapse movie. I wrote three songs that afternoon. Two of them were pretty good, as my songs go. I had just broken up with a girl I’d gone with for nearly 3 years, so I had a lot of songrwiting energy, I guess.

Anyhow, though I wrote it a quarter century ago, there’s never really been a proper recording. I decided to do something about that, but these things are never a direct path from point a to point b for me. This rough demo is sort of a snapshot along the way. What do I like in it? The snare brush. I think that’s pretty cool. That’s about the only thing I’d come close to keeping, at this point.
