Goin’ Home (for Ben)

Goin' Home

Damn.

My pals have been shuffling off this mortal coil faster than I can recover my equilibrium, here.

I guess I shouldn’t have been so surprised, Ben had been in the hospital a month or two ago with congestive heart failure. Still, though there’s not much about congestive heart failure that sounds like a walk in the park, it seemed like things were coming back together.

It looked like he’d even be going back to the work he loved: animation. He’d talked to Nickelodeon and it looked like they would be hiring him for a new project.

But it wasn’t to be.

Still, thing were looking up. He slipped into unconsciousness at his home and passed away not long after.

Damn.

Damn, damn, damn.

Goin’ Home

Wake up baby
turn your light down low…
I want ta see your pretty face
one more time before I go

They’re coming for me in the morning
coming to take me home…
When you see that light in the sky
that’s when you know I’m going home

[bridge]

When you see that light in the sky
that’s when you know I’m going home…
Don’t try to call me baby
cause they ain’t got no telephone

Every alien, every angel… [Going Home v.2]

Going Home

Every alien, every angel, every crown prince in disguise, every escapee, every condemned man on the lose — or, for that matter, every soon-to-be-ascended avatar — must go through that moment of realization, a moment when he knows just what he’s leaving behind when he’s called home. (In my songs, often as not, it’s a moment of realization that comes in a rundown, roadside motel.)

Goin’ Home

XXXXX
Can you say recurring theme?

OK… can you say self-plagiarism?

I thought you could.

Anyhow, this intentionally vague bit of nonsense falls in with the previous AYoS entry, Angel’s Vacation (and even steps off on that post’s graphic) only working the alien side of the equation. If someone wanted to think of those songs (and perhaps others that momentarily escape me) as something of an homage to Nicholas Roeg’s Man Who Fell to Earth, I wouldn’t try to disabuse them of the notion. But they’re not related to the rash of late 80s, early 90s angels movies, none of which I’ve seen.
