I virtually never read the rock press but I was stuck in an airport or train station on a backpack tour through Europe back in &#8217;86 and picked up a Spin magazine. In it was some kind of article about some rocker. The writer couldn&#8217;t seem to get over the <em>burden<\/em> of this rock star&#8217;s crushing boredom. The rock scribbler was <em>pouring<\/em> out empathy for this multimillionaire.<\/p>\n<p>Now, I&#8217;m as compassionate as the next jaded old cynic, but somehow I was having a rough time wrapping myself around this rich rock star&#8217;s life dilemma&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>Anyhow, this is what spilled out&#8230;<span style=\"font-size: 78%;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<!--[if lt IE 9]><script>document.createElement('audio');<\/script><![endif]-->\n<audio class=\"wp-audio-shortcode\" id=\"audio-8-1\" preload=\"none\" style=\"width: 100%;\" controls=\"controls\"><source type=\"audio\/mpeg\" src=\"http:\/\/www.archive.org\/download\/A_Star_Is_Bored\/AYOSprod20050920A_Star_Is_Bored__duo.mp3?_=1\" \/><a href=\"http:\/\/www.archive.org\/download\/A_Star_Is_Bored\/AYOSprod20050920A_Star_Is_Bored__duo.mp3\">http:\/\/www.archive.org\/download\/A_Star_Is_Bored\/AYOSprod20050920A_Star_Is_Bored__duo.mp3<\/a><\/audio>\n<p><strong>A STAR IS BORED<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A star is bored<br \/>\nprowling empty hotel hallways<br \/>\nHe&#8217;s never alone<br \/>\nso how come he&#8217;s always lonely<\/p>\n<p><em>Nothing gets him down<br \/>\nit&#8217;s all just the same<br \/>\nsaying &#8220;If you think you&#8217;re bored,<br \/>\nthen you should see me!&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Down in the bar<br \/>\nleaning into a smokey corner<br \/>\ntrying not to catch her eye:<br \/>\n&#8220;Say, cowboy, why you dressed like that?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><em>And it always seems to<br \/>\ngo down about the same<br \/>\nIt kills a couple of hours<br \/>\nbut it don&#8217;t kill the pain<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Tell him a story<br \/>\nmake it long, make it lonely<br \/>\nLots of starstruck summer nights<br \/>\nand the moon&#8217;s reflection on the river that runs through<br \/>\neverything<\/p>\n<p><em>Nothing makes much sense<br \/>\nbut he guesses that&#8217;s just life<br \/>\nYa play a few songs<br \/>\nand then they turn out the lights<\/em><br \/>\n<em><br \/>\nYeah, nothing makes much sense<br \/>\nand he guesses that&#8217;s just life<br \/>\nYou have a couple of laughs<br \/>\nand then you call it a night<\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>This recording of this song aspires to what I believe the music press likes to call &#8220;amiable sloppiness.&#8221; I thought it was important to deflate any unreasonable expectations of slickness &#8212; or even competence &#8212; early on.
