A veritable cornerstone of pop music. Topic of some of the 60&#8217;s best rock and pop writers: your Dylans, your Stones, your Lennons and your McCartneys, <span style=\"font-style: italic;\">et al.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>It was a time when <span style=\"font-style: italic;\">everyone<\/span> seemed to be telling <span style=\"font-style: italic;\">someone<\/span> (and sometimes <span style=\"font-style: italic;\">everyone<\/span>) else to just go&#8230;<span style=\"font-style: italic;\"> jump in a lake.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>My lost generation was telling <span style=\"font-style: italic;\">our <\/span>parents &#8212; who we now revere and lionize as the Heroic World War II Generation &#8212; to take their repressive social mores and rigid caste and racial divisions &#8212; and their &#8220;ugly little war&#8221; in Vietnam &#8212; and&#8230; <span style=\"font-style: italic;\">take a hike<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>Workers were questioning the advantage of <span style=\"font-style: italic;\">the yoke. <\/span>Foremen and bosses were telling <span style=\"font-style: italic;\">their <\/span>bosses to shove <span style=\"font-style: italic;\">it <\/span>up the executive elevator shaft. And the rich were ignoring the pleadings of their brokers and legal staffs to join monasteries and ashrams.<\/p>\n<p>But me&#8230; I was trying to make my relationship with my GF of the moment <span style=\"font-style: italic;\">work&#8230;<\/span><\/p>\n<p>I can hear the eyeballs rolling up across cyberspace&#8230; but, honestly&#8230; oh, never mind&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>Let&#8217;s say that I thought, <span style=\"font-style: italic;\">then<\/span>, that I was trying to make it work.<\/p>\n<p>At any rate, I wrote this while I was still involved with my GF of the moment&#8230; and would be, on and off, for a couple more years, <span style=\"font-style: italic;\">give or take<\/span>&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>And I <span style=\"font-style: italic;\">told<\/span> her it wasn&#8217;t about her or directed to her&#8230;
