I wrote those lines in 1973 or 1974, a time when promises really didn’t<\/span> seem to mean much.<\/p>\n

People felt betrayed by every institution from politics to religion, burned by every emotion from hate to love.<\/p>\n\n

\nI’ll believe in you until I’m dead
\nBut at the rate things are going
\nThat could be any day
\nI don’t care

You say you’re my lover
\nmy sister my brother my friend
\nI’m surprised you don’t claim
\nto be my mother my father
\nand the priest that the church said they’d send at the end<\/p>\n

And I still don’t care what anyone says
\nI’ll be loving you until I’m put in my grave
\nbut at the rate things are going
