Judgment Day

A Bird Hung in the Sky

A change is gonna come…

You’ve been hearing that your whole life, probably. But now the change is here…

Of course, it’s been happening for a while. We’ve heard increasingly dire warnings since the 1960s and even before.

But it was easier to say, oh sure, that’s tomorrow . That’s for those folks in the future to worry about. For sure, they’ll have the technology to cope. For sure…

Well, kids… the future is here and it don’t look like it’s gonna be pretty.

And you can blame all those people in the past… who — like a lot of folks today — just didn’t want to hear about it…

lyrics
A Bird Hung in the Sky

A bird hung in the sky
dipped and whirled and then it spun
A bird hung in the sky
dipped and whirled and then it spun
It flew between the clouds
and dove right into the sun

I stood upon a hill
looked up into the sky
I stood upon a hill
looked up into the sky
The sky turned black
as the sun burnt into my eyes

Don’t the city sure look strange
cars scattered all around
The city sure looks strange
cars scattered all around
Don’t the people look funny
lying there dead on the ground

Smogsville, USA

PS… It’s actually kind of a nice day here in the smoggiest urban area of the United States… except, I guess, for the smog. It was stinkin’ hot yesterday but today there’s a nice breeze coming in off the ocean. Of course, that ain’t gonna help the poor SOB’s out in the inland empire or even OC. But if you can overlook the brown haze stacked up on the horizon like multiple blankets of steel wool you could almost fool yourself into thinking it was a nice day. (Check out the layering in the picture above — it’s like a merde parfait… so to speak.) See those long ugly things out in the harbor? Those are a source of a huge amount of pollution — they’re oil tankers and container ships and they pump brown, heavy particulate matter across the harbor area 24/7, never turning off their engines completely, pumping out poisons that put the area at the top of the asthma risk index — and harming anyone with lungs. Long Beach used to have the cleanest air, on average, of all of Southern California. But, in the name of trade — that is to say importing cheap, shoddy goods from offshore businesses owned by multinational corporations — we’ve had these poison-spewing behemoths shoved down our throats.

UPDATE: Silly me! I forgot we had a brush fire raging in the hills to the east. Not that the tankers and container ships don’t deserve all the hell anyone can give ’em. They do. But they’re not the only culprit this time…

This is actually a new fire, near Griffith Park, in LA. At 2:57 this afternoon…

L.A. as seen from the good ol’ LBC, about 30 miles to the south… don’t worry about us… one good thing about this city is that there’s precious little brush to catch fire…

The end is coming… as it always has been.

The End is coming... with dynamite

For most of my adult life, many folks have been warning about the consequences of our shortsighted and greedy suck up of natural resources and the degradation of our environment.

And, since the late 60s, one of the recurring warnings has been about the potentially disastrous implications of upsetting global climate patterns with the build-up of gases in the atmosphere related to human activities.

And for most of that time, I’ve listened as a chorus of those who would fight any attempt to curtail their accumulation of obscene amounts of wealth have made one spurious and deceitful claim after another trying to buy themselves a little more time to suck the life out of the only world we have and increase their stacks of gold.

Now, we are confronted with the clear and painful evidence of the disastrous consequences of the actions of the greedy and the uncaring.

And, frankly, I’m at a loss for words…

On the one hand, I have a deep and burning anger for the sins of greed and arrogance of these criminals, these monsters — and on the other I recognize that I’m just as guilty in my own ways. I consoled myself that my own sins and crimes were so much smaller than theirs — and that I talked a good fight. But guilty, nonetheless.

Anyhow… it’s Friday and it’s looking like a beautiful day here at the western edge of the American continent. Even in the shadow of these dark thoughts, the sky is blue and the sun is shining. It’s not a perfect day, maybe, but it’s a beautiful day.

One of those beautiful days we have to remember to live fully and really appreciate… because, whether or not the End-of-Life-on-Earth-as-We-Know-It is coming for all of us as a race — as little creaturs crawling around on this pretty rock in space — we all know the End is coming for each and every one of us.

Go out and live. This isn’t forever.

It never was…

This Perfect Day

petals drift through the warm spring air
got my hand in your pocket got my nose in your hair
got my heart on my sleeve and it’s all too clear
everything i wanted is all right here

this perfect time this perfect place
a perfect tear slides down your face
It’s such a shame
It’s such a shame…

the rain comes down all night long
we just lie there until the dawn
the world’s in your eyes and you’re in my arms
everything I wanted right here all along

this perfect time this perfect place…

one last kiss one last sigh
one last wish though you know it’s a lie
One more laugh just to not have to cry
I love you baby til the end of time

this perfect time this perfect place
a perfect tear slides down your face
It’s such a shame
It’s such a shame…

The time for salvation has come and gone

Time for another flood...

Tipping points.

They’re like subway stations, I guess. If you miss one, it’s gonna be a helluva ride back.

And sometimes, having missed your stop, you find yourself at a place where it really can be said: You can’t get there from here.

That’s what a lot of people have been saying for a long time — but there was no money in their message and it was ignored and ignored again — and now we seem poised to find out just how true their jeremiads will prove to be.

Anyhow, I feel sorry for all the little furry, feathered, and scaled creatures who will be swept along with our sorry furless backsides in the floods to come…

Somehow, I feel the cockroaches will survive. Like the forces of the Old South taking over the Party of Lincoln little more than a century after its founding, they will probably be the victors over man, mammal, bird, and lizard… but what will be left of the spoils?

Time for Another Flood

People think heaven is behind the sky
People thinking crazy things and not thinking why
They think the answer’s going to fall from above
I think the answer is another flood

It’s time, time for another flood
It’s time, baby, time for another flood

People live in wickedness and dwell in greed
They’ll murder their brother to get more than they need
They even rape the Mother and swim in her blood
I call on the Father for another flood

It’s time, time for another flood
It’s time, baby, time for another flood

All of this truth has all been a lie
Our immortal souls have already died
The time for salvation has come and gone
and all that’s coming now is another flood

It’s time, time for another flood
It’s time, baby, time for another flood

This perfect time, this perfect place…

This Perfect Day

The sun was warm. Cherry blossom petals floated past them. His hand was in her back pocket and his nose nuzzled her hair behind her ear as they walked through the park around the little lake. She giggled. Kids squealed and played on the rolling lawn above the lake. The sky above was as blue as a painting.

That night, a restless love overtook them, transporting them and transforming them and leaving them spent, lying across each other, just before dawn…

This Perfect Day

petals drift through the warm spring air
got my hand on your butt got my nose in your hair
got my heart on my sleeve and it’s all too clear
everything i wanted is all right here

this perfect time this perfect place
a perfect tear slides down your face
It’s such a shame
It’s such a shame…

the rain comes down all night long
we just lie there until the dawn
the world’s in your eyes and you’re in my arms
everything I wanted right here all along

this perfect time this perfect place…

one last kiss one last sigh
one last wish though you know it’s a lie
One more laugh just to not have to cry
I love you baby til the end of time

this perfect time this perfect place
a perfect tear slides down your face
It’s such a shame
It’s such a shame…
