Goin' Home (for Ben)

Goin' Home

Damn.

My pals have been shuffling off this mortal coil faster than I can recover my equilibrium, here.

I guess I shouldn't have been so surprised, Ben had been in the hospital a month or two ago with congestive heart failure. Still, though there's not much about congestive heart failure that sounds like a walk in the park, it seemed like things were coming back together.

It looked like he'd even be going back to the work he loved: animation. He'd talked to Nickelodeon and it looked like they would be hiring him for a new project.

But it wasn't to be.

Still, thing were looking up. He slipped into unconsciousness at his home and passed away not long after.

Damn.

Damn, damn, damn.

Goin' Home

Wake up baby
turn your light down low...
I want ta see your pretty face
one more time before I go

They're coming for me in the morning
coming to take me home...
When you see that light in the sky
that's when you know I'm going home

[bridge]

When you see that light in the sky
that's when you know I'm going home...
Don't try to call me baby
cause they ain't got no telephone

Loving friends! Be wise and dry
Straitway every weeping eye; What you left upon the bier Isnot worth a single tear; Tis a simple sea-shell, one Out of which the pearl has gone. The shell was nothing, leave it there; the pearl - the soul - was all, is here. ~ Ralph Waldo Trine

Thanks, Anon.

I find much solace in the wisdom of those who've gone before and I appreciate your kind thoughts. Take care of yourself. And go out there and live. It must be what we're here for...

Clearly the universe is not well managed, when a perfectly nice guy goes toes up from heart failure in his mid-forties. But thanks for the song; somehow music and poetry give a sense of order.

Some things, it's said, are beyond knowing. Ultimately, I guess, it's all snow on the water.

But I know we're all gonna miss Ben... it's just hard to imagine he won't come clomping into the coffeehouse anymore... some people really leave an indelible mark... though you might not think about it until they're gone. I still think about our old pal, Danner. And I only knew him from the coffeehouse. I knew Ben for over twenty years and used to read his college paper comics almost a decade before that...
